Our Adventures Downunder

This is the story (with pictures) of our trip to Australia via NYC for the 2005 Christmas holidays. We hope you enjoy it.

*NB* Spence is otherwise known as "Sea" to all our relatives reading this wondering who on earth I'm talking about. It's just quicker to type and makes more sense to all our online friends.

I am now back home and continuing to update this travelogue. Please keep checking back as I'll be adding new pages as soon as possible.

Thanks,
   ~ Jess

The first part of our trip was the train from Syracuse, NY to downtown Manhattan. We had just come down with a really bad cold and didn't have very much sleep the night before. I now really wish I had taken pictures of the beautiful sunrise we saw over the Thousand Islands on the drive down to Syracuse, but for some reason I didn't think of it.

Regretably, we missed the birth of Elliot VanDusen, Jess' new nephew that night, but our train tickets were booked in advance and there wasn't much we could do.

This is our brand new laptop purchased mainly so we could work while we travel.
Picture taken on the train.

This is Albany. From what I could through the windows of the train, it looks
like it has some very interesting architechture.

This is pretty much the scenery all along the Hudson river on the way through upstate NY.

It was around this bridge that I could start to see NYC off in the distance.

We made our way from the train station via subway to our rather small
room for the next few days. We stayed in the Bowery's Whitehouse Hotel - which, in actual fact was more of a slightly more private hostel.

Just to give you an idea of exactly how small...

We did a bit of exploring around Soho, Little Italy and Chinatown that night. I found this bizarre statue of some sort of 16 breasted creature - just down the street from the "Morrison Hotel" as seen on the cover of the Doors album by the same name.
(Which incidentally is now a gallery.)

The base of the statue was quite interesting as well...

We had some great wonton soup at Wonton Garden. It was good for our colds
and there weren't a lot of places open at this hour anyway.
