Our Adventures Downunder

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

We spent the better part of the day sightseeing uptown. It was very windy and a little bit cold and we walked quite a long way (from the lower part of the West Village to the lower-middle part of Central Park and back.)

In the morning, we charged the laptop batteries in the lounge at our "hotel" and I became acquainted with the in-house mouser, Mama Cat. Like most cats, she feels that newspapers are meant to be sat upon, not read. She made herself at home on my lap.

We had breakfast/lunch at a diner on Broadway called Bon Vivant. My chicken soup and pastrami sandwich hit the spot and Sea had a great spinach quiche with greek salad.

We traveled up Broadway and got a glimpse of the Empire State Building.
We didn't bother going up but did explore the lobby, which in itself is quite impressive.

At Times Square, we visited the massive Toy R Us store where
there was a fantastic lego exhibit. Here's the Statue of Liberty.

...and the Chrysler Building.

And well, I was just really amused by this.

Further up the street was the Hershey Building (obviously.)

This is the building where the Letterman Show is recorded (obviously.)

Here is the Hello Deli that features regularly on the Late Show. I would have liked to have gone inside but it's very tiny and full of people. And since I get claustrophobic and am not a fan of crowds, well.. this was the best I could do...

I didn't get any pictures of Central Park but it wasn't all that interesting. We stopped for a hot drink and it got very cold and windy as the sun went down. Then we had to find bathroom, which was almost impossible as most of them were closed.

This was inside FAO Shwartz, a very upmarket toy store (as seen in the movie "Big.")
I have no idea how much these stuffed animals cost but I'm sure it's a lot.

I don't know what building this is, and unfortunately the photo doesn't do it justice.
It was actually lit up all gold and pinkish and located at some square that, as far as
I can remember, wasn't Union Sq. It might have been, but I don't think so.
(I do remember there was a doggy park right next to it.)

We also walked by places like Trump Tower, Radio City Music Hall and the
Rockefeller Center; but by then it was getting to be rush hour and VERY crowded, so
I didn't bother taking any pictures.

We returned to our hotel totally wiped. I took some more pictures of the lounge.
I think we were even too tired to eat.

The lounge had a giant TV with entirely too many channels. I think this was still
relatively early in the evening, but we just drank some fluids and passed out.
It was like we already had jet lag.
